The impact of online gaming on culture and society

As we continue our journey into the fascinating world of online gaming, it is time to zoom in on a specific aspect that has caught my attention - the influence of online gaming on culture and society. Let us together find out how online gaming develops from niche hobbies for some people, to one of the most popular things among young people. In addition, I will talk about how online gaming combines with other commercial areas to influence young people and therefore leaves impacts on the ways we, as college students communicate.

The Origins of Online Gaming

The roots of online gaming can be traced back to the early days of computer networks and multiplayer gaming. In the 1970s and 1980s, games like MUD (Multi-User Dungeon) were to some extent prototypes of the online multiplayer games we get to know today. One of the great examples of MUD games is Dragon’s_Gate. These early online games played important roles while introducing gameplay styles such as collaborating, competing to players. Later when players have learned and explored the ways of communicating with each other and grown mature while playing online games, the MUD games gradually and eventually faded away from the world we live, leaving only some countable traces on the Internet.

Cultures and Perspectives in Online Gaming

Online gaming has become popular among various age groups, especially among teenagers such as college students. Due to the fast development of technology and internet, more and more players from various cultures and backgrounds have grown interests on online gaming. When sitting in front of the computer at home and staring at the screen, the beauty of this digital realm goes beyond the geographical boundaries, allowing and attracting players from all over the world to connect and interact. Regardless of the players’ differences in cultural backgrounds or beliefs, online gaming unites the players as a big group, aiming at creating a healthy and competitive environment for players to communicate and enjoy themselves.

The development of gaming tournaments

With more people playing online games, many discourse communities are gradually formed as proof. Players start to hold online gaming tournaments in order to share interests and invite more new blood. A great example of gaming tournament can be the Overwatch league, which takes the lead during the fast development of First-person_shooter games. While the players may come from different cultures, they share a common goal, which is to win the well-made trophy that stands for victory.

As a result, this global competition encourages a unique form of cultural exchange and understanding. While many tournaments are successfully held, more and more sponsors start to invest on online games for advertisement, which provides different teams with abundant fund to recruit members and help train their professional players.
